Voices of Tomorrows Songs: A Vision Statement for American Opera According to its Next Generation of Leaders: An Interview With Duncan Holzhall

A common issue that opera companies face in reckoning with their aging audiences is a failure to engage with younger people and consider what draws them to opera; these companies are then dumbstruck when they see that their audiences (as well as their performers) are only getting older. To solve this problem, the author conducted hours of interviews with burgeoning American opera professionals to gauge how they interact with opera, and where they want to guide the opera industry. Spanning almost every aspect of the creative process, the monograph contains edited interviews with singers, librettists, composers, teachers, technical staff, administrators, and more. Each interview provides a nuanced and honest perspective on issues such as representation, diversity, accessibility, creativity, innovation, education, and sustainability, among others. Integrating historical insight, the project culminates in a vision statement for the American opera industry, along with recommendations for opera companies in line with the next generations' ideas about improving the art form.
