How to Display Your Virtual Voice

Do we still need to consider virtual performance opportunities once in-person performances are back in full swing? The answer is yes, absolutely!

Here’s the thing: even though in-person performance opportunities are slowly popping up again, there will still be a demand for virtual performances. Many companies have embraced the new digital terrain as a way to make our art even more accessible and convenient for a wider audience. Learning to create your own virtual performances now will help set you up for future success. We’ve broken down each step to help streamline the process:

Step 1: Deciding Between Livestreaming and Pre-Recorded Premieres

When creating a virtual performance, you essentially have two options: stream yourself performing live at a designated time or pre-record your performance and premiere it at a scheduled time. There are advantages to either option, so go with your gut. If you’re someone who thrives on the adrenaline of a live performance, then stick to your strengths. However, if you like the idea of being able to create a polished, edited recording without the risk of technical issues, go with the pre-recorded option. A livestream will typically require less work behind the scenes, but it may not turn out exactly as planned in terms of audio and video quality. If you're able to, experiment with both options to find your personal preference.

Step 2: Choosing A Platform

Fortunately, creating a virtual performance today is fairly simple. Here are just a few platforms that make airing your live or pre-recorded performance seamless:

Facebook

Facebook is great because you can not only air your virtual performance but also create an event and invite your audience. Also, many of us are already well-versed in Facebook and would therefore feel comfortable navigating a virtual performance in this familiar space. To stream a live performance, all you need to do is head over to your main feed and click "Live Video." As a bonus, Facebook will automatically save your livestream so you always have a recording of your performance. If you’d like to air a pre-recorded video, you’ll need to schedule your performance ahead of time as a “premiere.” Once you’ve scheduled your performance and uploaded your video, your event will go live at your scheduled time. Here are some handy instructions for scheduling a premiere on Facebook

YouTube

Just like Facebook, YouTube allows its users to either livestream a performance or schedule a premiere for a pre-recorded video. However, YouTube will only allow accounts to livestream on a mobile device if you have at least 1,000 followers. Be sure to verify your account for livestream ahead of time, as this process can take up to twenty-four hours. Once you're verified and ready to perform, all you need to do is direct your audience to your YouTube page at your designated performance time and click “go live.” YouTube also automatically archives livestreams, so your performance will be saved. For premieres, YouTube will generate a watch page for you to send out to your audience once it is scheduled. YouTube’s premiere feature even includes a professional-looking countdown theme to keep your audience eagerly anticipating your performance. Here’s some helpful info on getting started with livestreams and premieres on YouTube.

Zoom

For better or worse, we’ve all become intimately acquainted with Zoom. In addition to being a work and classroom space, Zoom is also great for virtual performances. To create a performance on Zoom, schedule your “meeting” just as you normally would and share the invite details with your audience. A live performance will carry out just as it would when you normally use the software. Don't forget to press record at the start! We've all dealt with subpar audio quality on Zoom, so here's a helpful guide for optimizing your audio for music. If you’re using a pre-recorded performance, you’ll still want to greet your audience live and then share your screen with the video of your performance when you’re ready. Be sure to share computer sound as well so that your audience can hear you!

Instagram Live

Much like Facebook, Instagram is a very familiar platform for most of us. In fact, many of you may already have experience going live on this platform. Instagram Live is easy to use, only requires the click of a button, and functions similarly to Facebook Live. However, it is currently not possible to air a pre-recorded performance on Instagram, so this option would only work if you’re planning on performing live.

Step 3: Creating Your Ideal Setup

Virtual performances present unique obstacles, but they also offer an outlet for creativity. For a virtual performance, you will need to decide whether you’ll be singing to a pre-recorded accompaniment or in the same room as your accompanist. You will also need to figure out an equipment set up, including mics, cameras, etc. You’ll definitely want to rehearse this process just as you would rehearse for a live performance so that you’re not met with any logistical surprises. Try gathering advice from colleagues to get an idea of their equipment set up and test out different options to find your ideal production quality.

If you're filming at home, be mindful of your lighting and decor. Areas with a lot of natural light are always flattering; however, if you're filming in the evening, test your lighting setup beforehand to make sure you're sufficiently visible. Inexpensive ring lights from Amazon are a great way to easily boost your video quality. For decor, choosing a space with minimal distractions will keep the focus on you. Aim for open, neutral, and uncluttered spaces if possible. Check out our article, Tips and Tricks for Video Recording, for more help!

Virtual performances are not only a great way to keep yourself actively engaged in your art but also build a skillset that you will undoubtedly continue to use even as pandemic restrictions ease. There are so many options available, and it is easier than ever to find the best fit for your virtual performance goals. Now go out there and start creating the virtual performance of your dreams!
